Note

Fritz attended public schools, including Jr. High PS 186 and Stuyvesant High. He was also a student at Barnard School for Boys. Like their brother Louis, both Fritz and brother Ben attended Columbia College, although unlike Louis, neither graduated. Also like Louis, they both joined Phi Gamma Delta. Fritz's stories of his time in college rarely touched on studies, but mostly concerned the fraternity and their participation on the football team. In 1932 Fritz was awarded a varsity letter for his role as manager of the Freshman-Sophmore Cane Spree. The spree was a venerable tradition involving wrestling matches between the freshman and sophomore classes over possession of cane, the cane, if won, conferring on the freshmen some degree of freedom from harassment.
