Harry Hettema's divorce from his first wife (whom Susan Sylstra names as Kate) resulted in the splitting up of the church to which he and Kate belonged. The story is told in contemporary newspaper accounts. See: "War in a Congregation Over Divorce," New York Sun, 15 July 1913 Here is one report: Shed Tears With Penitent Pastor Passaic, N.J. Aug. 7. -- Thje Rev. Aric J. Vanderheuvel, pastor of the North Side Christian Reformed Church, made a public apology before his congregation for acting unwisely in making an affidavit in the divorce suit brought by Harry Hettema, a member of his congregation. The apology was the result of an order from the Hudson classis of the Reformed Church, which took up the matter at its annual session in Paterson last week. Nearly 500 members were present at the services which where conducted by the Rev. K. Vangoor of Paterson, who preached on the evils of allowing social scandals so to involve the members as almost to cause the disruption of the church. After the sermon Mr. Vandenheuvel made his apology, admitting he had acted with indiscretion when he made the affidavit giving out a statement which had been made before him by Mrs. Hettema supposedly in confidence. Many in the congregation wept with the pastor. "Shed Tears With Penitent Pastor," Syracuse Daily Record, 11 Aug 1911 |
