Arthur D. Hettema, 94, Angola, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, in Angola. He was born Feb. 7, 1909 in Passiac, N.J., to Guy M. and Nellie Hellegers Hettema. He married M. Adeline Hughes on Aug. 17, 1937. She preceded him in death on Jan. 17, 1990. Mr. Hettema was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a chief petty officer on an underwater demolition team, decorated with a bronze star. He retired in 1974 from Hagerman Construction, where he was a superintendent. He was a member of the Presbyterian Chapel of the Lakes, a 57-year member of the Elks Lodge and a member of the Carpenters Union No. 1935. Survivors include a stepdaughter, Susan Babcock of Angola; a brother, Robert, of State College, Pa.; a granddaughter, Trudy Kurtz of Angola; a grandson, Eric Babcock of Angola; four great-granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews. Also preceding him in death were a brother, Tom, and three sisters: Edith Hilldebrand, Florence Heinen and Gerry Harris. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Graveside services will be officiated by the Rev. Tom Smith on Friday at 11 a.m. at Circle Hill Cemetery, Angola. A military graveside service by the Angola American Legion Post No. 31 will follow.
