Lee James Hettema
SALEM (1948-2022) Lee J. Hettema, of Salem, Oregon passed away peacefully on February 23, 2022.
Lee's early years were spent in N. J., Illinois, and N.Y., where he attended schools in Croton-on-Hudson. As a youngster he was involved in scouting and spent a week on a large sailing vessel. During high school he was on the wrestling and football teams and worked as a lifeguard at Silver Lake. He attended Purdue University studying engineering and afterwards lived on Martha's Vineyard. It was here that he had the opportunity to work on the set of the movie Jaws. Eventually he made his way out west and settled in Salem, Oregon. Lee worked as both a surveyor and a teacher for the state of Oregon. Some of his jobs were unusual: he observed owls in the Cascades and counted the catch on a Japanese fishing vessel. During his years in Salem he was very active in the Salem Men's Group. In his later years he became keenly interested in poetry promoting various local poets and publishing some of his own writing. All his life he loved science, great literature, and environmental causes. He loved to tell stories and had an infectious laugh.
Lee is survived by four of his siblings; Mark Hettema of Evergreen, CO., and James Hettema, Terry Jacobs, and Ginger Megley of the Bay Area. The family will have a memorial service at a later date.
