Adoptive parents: John Edmund Thorne + Amanda R. Kissam Adoption: Adopted by both parents Note: The 1850 US Census for New York City lists Abigail Lennington, age 12, as a member of the household of Sarah Lennington, age 105, along with John E. Thorne, age 34 and Amanda Thorne, age 19. The census for that year did not indicate whether household members were related to each other. John E. Thorne was clearly Sarah Lennington's grandson and Amanda Thorne his wife, but Abigail Lennington might not have been a daughter. If she was not John E. Thorne's daughter by birth, however, she was certainly his daughter by adoption, because Sarah Lenningon's will calls Abigail Lennington Thorne her great-granddaughter. Note
|
The 1850 US Census lists Sarah Lennington as head of a household that included John E. Thorne, age 34, Amanda Thorne, age 19, and Abigail Lennington, age 12. It is generally assumed that both Amanda and Abigail were daughters of Sarah's son, John E. Thorne. However, the census recorder rarely if ever included middle names in these sheets and it therefore seems likely that Abigail's surname was Lennington, not middle name. For that reason I have shown her as an adopted daughter. The 1830 US Census gives the name of household head and lists other members only by age group. In that year Sarah Lenington was listed as head of a household including one male age 10 to 14 and that is the likely age of John E. Thorne at the time. It lists one female aged between 30 and 39. That fits his sister, Sarah's daughter Abby Lenington. |
