Dr. Gray married Amanda Thorne in 1870. She gave birth to Hugh Barr
Gray in 1872, James M. Gray Jr. in 1879, and a son Charles who lived
only six months. Unfortunately, Mrs. Gray died in childbirth in 1875
while giving birth to their fifth child who did not survive either.

Note

The 1870 US Census report for New York, NY, has a record showing that Amanda P. Thorne, then 19 and living at home, was in the household of Peter R. Kissam, then 37, and his wife Angeline, then 35. The household also included Frank (16) and Cora (13) children of Peter and Angeline.
