Note

From Edward Kissam:

RICHARD SHARPE, born in New York
city, February 20th, 1763. Was
graduated M. D. at Edinburgh, 1789.
After making a tour of Europe, he
began the practice of medicine and
surgery in 1791, in his native city.
With close application and marked
success he soon became thoroughly
absorbed in his profession. Was
one of the surgical faculty of the
New York Hospital, where he ren-
dered valuable service and display-
ed in his art resources of practical
tact and original genius. Dr. Fran-
cis, in his " Old New York," says of
him that *' During more than twen-
ty years, he was the most popular
operator the city could boast. He
was emulous of surgical glory, and
he obtained it," His professional
liberality to the afflicted poor was
observable as a characteristic of his
whole life.
