Shared note

Major Richard Thorne: Public Records frequently fail to mention men
who took an active part in the early government. Colonial records
were inaccurately kept and poorly preserved. The name of Major Thorne
Apparently is not mentioned in any of the public, milltary or colonial
records and the following letter from the New York State liibrarian
will be of interest.

Miss Sarah W. Thorne

Miss Sarah W. Thorne, for more than fifty years connected with the
charitable work of St. Paul's Chapel, died yesterday at her home,
at 127 West Fifteenth Street. She was in her 89th year. Entering
the work of the parish in 1846, Miss Thorne continued her activity
until about three years ago, when her age made her retirement necessary.
She had a room in the mission house in Church Street, and there conducted
mothers' meetings and taught Bible classes. She also directed the
distribution of clothing and visited the poor in their homes. Miss
Thorne was a granddaughter of Major Richard Thorne, who was imprisoned
in this city during the Revolution. Her maternal grandfather, Gabriel
Wisner of Orange County, N.J., was killed during the Revolutionary
War, and her greatgrandfather, Henry Wisner, voted in the Continental
Congress for the Declaration of Independe
