Geraldine Hettema Harris, 85

Geraldine Hettema Harris, 85, of 215 Rio Villa, Punta Gorda Fla. died Aug. 10, 1998.

She was born in Passaic, N.J. on Dec. 14, 1912. She was a graduate of Passiac High School and the Fifth Avenue School of Nursing. She was a surgical nurse at Cornell Medical Center New York Hospital, 1934-1939.

She was married to Edwin Alan Harris in 1937 and over a ten-year period she lived in five countries while her husband worked for the U.S. Embassy during WW II.

She was a co-founder of the American School of Lima, Peru. She was a volunteer during WW II for Bundles for Britain, the American Red Cross and the USO in Lima, Peru. Upon returning to the U.S. she was the assistant health chairman for the PTA of Rockville, Maryland.

She was an elder of the Bedford Village Presbyterian Church and member of the Mt. Kisco and Punta Gorda, Fla. Country Clubs. After the death of her husband in July of 1978 she relocated to Punta Gorda, Florida.

Surviving are E. Allen Harris Jr. of Watertown; Paul Harris of San Marcos, Calif. and Christopher J. Harris of Baldwinsville. She was the sister of Arthur D. Hettema of Angola, Ind. and Robert M. Hettema of State College, Penn.; and grandmother to Alexia, Jessica, Eric, Christopher and Kelcey Harris.

Services were Monday at the First Presbyterian Church, 217 St. Lawrence Ave., Hammond.
