bullet *Laurence Ellison(61) was born about 1590 in England. He died before 29 Dec 1665 in Hempstead, Long Island, New York.

He was married about 1620. From "Colonial Families of Long Island, NY, and Connecticut", by Herbert Furman Seversmith, 1939:

Lawrence Ellison "was born about 1595, and probably in England. The baptismal record has not been found. In view of the fact that his son Richard appears of record in Braintree, Massachusetts, as early as 1646, it may be that Lawrence ellison was there also. He is, however of record as being in the Connecticut Colony 1 June, 1643 and was then perhaps of Hartford; in the record the other persons mentioned were at the time of that place. He brought an action in the Particular Court of Connecticut on that date through his attorney William Hills against Thomas Marshfield. The jury found for the plaintiff to the amount of four pounds damages.

Stiles in his "History of Windsor, Connecticut", Vol. I, page 155 states that in 1644 Lawrence Ellison forfeited an allotment of land near the lot of Williams Phelps, 'because he did not comply with terms of the grans', the terms having been that ellison should have been in residence there for two years now past or the grant should be void. The lot was given to Thomas Orton in March of 1646. It is usually stated that Ellison was, however, a resident of Windsor in 1653; after that date he had removed to Hempstead, New York.

Lawrence Ellison was recorded as Goodman Ellison at Hempstead in 1657; he had, together with his sons John and Thomas, six 'gattes'; he was listed in the rates made for a levy to pay public charges, 3 March 1658/9, and was townsman in 1659. Also in 1658 he with his son John became sureties for the good behavior of Henry Linnington, who had married Lawrence's daughter Catharine.

Lawrence Ellison died after 5 June, 1665 and before 29 December, 1665. The administration of his estate was granted to his three sons 2 June, 1666. He was probably buried at Hempstead, New York.

He probably married in England, and about 1620..."

The surname Ellison is of the ELLISON class of Johnson, Williamson,

derived from personal names. Ellis or Elles means son-in-law by the wife, as Els or Ells means a son-in-law by the husband. The surname is also derived from Elias, used in France as a proper name in the days of Charlemagne and hereditary at the time of the Norman Conquest. William Alis mentioned in the Domesday Book was progenitor of the Ellis family of Kedall. county York and Stoneacre, Kent, from whom Sir Archibald Ellys,

crusader of the time of Richard I descended. No less than eighteen variations of spelling Ellis are found. Allison and Ellison are both common forms of this surname. In Scotland where the family is numerous the family bears arms: Per bend gules and or a fleur-delis in bend between two annulets all countercharged. Several prominent English Ellison families bear arms: Per pale gules and vert an eagle displayed or. Crest: An eagle's head erased per fesse or and gules gorged with a mural cornet azure. Another: Argent a chevron gules between three griffins' heads erased sable. Crest: a greyhound sable. The family in county Durham bears: Gules a chevron or between three eagles Heads erased argent. Crest: Eagle's head erased or.

(I) Lawrence Ellison, the immigrant ancestor of the Ellison families of New York and New England, was born in England about 1590. He settled first in Watertown, Massachusetts, and went thence to Wethersfield, Connecticut, and Stamford, and later to Hempstead, Long Island, with others in the party of the Rev. Richard Denton in 1644. Most of these families who located at Hempstead were from Hemel, Hempstead, England, a town twenty miles from London. Others were from Halifax, Yorkshire, whence Mr. Denton himself came with Sir Richard Saltonstall in 1630. Ellison was taxed at Hempstead in 1657, and became a townsman in 1659. He died there in 1664 and his estate was administered by Richard, Thomas and John, the second estate listed upon the surrogate's books of that county, New York. Children: 1. Richard, mentioned below. 2. Thomas, born about 1622, resided at Hempstead. 3. John, born about 1624. 4. Daughter, married John Ellington.

(II) Richard Ellison, son of Lawrence Ellison (1), was born in England about 1620. He was in Braintree, Massachusetts, as early as 1645, removed to Hempstead, Long Island, where his father and brothers lived, about 1663, and m 1673 was taxed there on sixty acres of land; had land allotted to him in Hempstead Plain and was there in 1682. His will was dated February 14, 1630, and proved June 13. 1683. He bequeathed to wife Tamisen, to son John a hundred and fifty acres of land and a house; to son Thomas twenty-two acres; to sons-in-law Jonathan Smith and Joshua Jannock. Children of Richard and Tamisen, all born in Braintrec: 1. Mary, born June 15, 1646. 2. Hannah, May 24, 1648. 3. John, June 26, 1650, died unmarried leaving his property by will dated November 8, 1684, and proved in New York City to his brother Thomas, of Hempstead. 4. Sarah, October 4, 1652, married Joshua Jannock. 5. Thomas, mentioned below. 6. Experience (daughter). 7. Richard, February 7, 1660. 8. Rachel, married Jonathan Smith.

(III) Thomas Ellison, son of Richard Ellison (2), was born in Braintree, Massachusetts, January 1, 1655. He inherited property from his father and his brother John. His older brother Richard settled in New Jersey, while he seems to have remained at Hempstead, though he doubtless held property at Braintree, and may have lived there some of the time. The evidence all points to him as the father of John Ellison, of Mendon and Uxbridge, Massachusetts, which were settled mainly by Braintree and Weymouth families.

(IV) John Ellison, grandson of Richard Ellison (2), and son probably of Thomas Ellison (3), was born about 1710. He married, 1731, Hannah Aldrich, daughter of Peter and Hannah Aldrich, and they settled in Uxbridge from Worcester county. His first land he bought June 17, 1740, of Peter Aldrich, forty acres in Uxbridge. He was a blacksmith by trade, sometimes called bloomer in the records, and doubtless divided his time between his forge and his farm, after the custom of the early settlers who had trades. He may have learned his trade at some iron works in New York province where his father lived or at Braintree in this province, for blacksmiths were not unually called bloomers. He bought more land at Uxbridge, April 14, 1741, of Joseph Thompson, and three more parcels of land of Peter Aldrich, October 15,1747, March 23, 1764, and April 11, 1769. He died in 1773. His estate was divided among his heirs, June

10, 1774; widow Hannah; children: John, Jr., Susanna, Ann Williams, Thomas, Jacob, Molly, Hannah and Martha. The widow Hannah had a guardian in her old age, appointed January 5, 1790. Children, born in Uxbridge: 1. Susanna, born September 24, 1732. 2. Thomas, October 7, 1734. 3. John, September 7, 1736. 4. Anne, July 21, 1738. 5. Thomas, March 10, 1740-41. 6. Molly, April

11, 1744. 7. Jacob, July 5, 174—. 8. Hannah, July 24, 1749. 9. Martha, February 2, 1752. 10. Sarah, November 9, 1754. This is the only family of the name in Massachusetts at that time, and all the Uxbridge families are descended from John Ellison.

(V) John Ellison, Jr., son of John Ellison (4), was born in Uxbridge, September 7,

  1. He enlisted in the revolution, April 26. 1781, as a private in the Continental army for three years. He bought land on the west side of the Great river, of Samuel Aldrich, land given him by the late Deborah Aldrich to her son, Solomon Aldrich, thirty acres. His father deeded him land at Uxbridge, September 5, 1763.

(V) Thomas Ellison, son of John Ellison (4), was born at Uxbridge, March 10, 174041 ; he married, December 6, 1768, Dorothea Famplin, from Upton Pond; second, October 28, 1779, to Abigail Goldthwait, of Northbridge. He settled in the adjoining town of Northbridge. He seems to have lost all his property in 1814 by failure, as various pieces of real estate were sold at that time under execution to Amariah Chapin, Alpheus Dean. Aaron Thayer, Abijah Willard and Allen Thayer. He bought property July 14, 1784. of his brother Jacob at Northbridge, and sold land February 7, 1800. to James Fletcher, of Northbridge.

(V) Jacob Ellison, son of John Ellison (4), was born in Uxbridge, July 5, 174—. He was a housewright by trade. He married Hannah Berry. They were interested in the estate of Henry and Abigail Chase, of Petersham, as heirs, in 1799. He had litigation over the settlement of his father's estate. He resided at Uxbridge and Northbridge. He was a soldier in Captain John Howard's company. Colonel Samuel Brewer's regiment, in the revolution. His father deeded land to him in 1765. He had children: Jacob, Henry. Molly, Thomas. (Record at Worcester, Deed. No. '175-448),

(VI) Edward Ellison, grandson of John Ellison (4), and probably son or nephew of John Ellison (5), was born about 1770 in Uxbridge or vicinity. He was probably brother of Joseph Ellison, whose eldest son was named Willard. He married, at Northbridge, February 28, 1793, Polly Pierce, born April 7, 1771. daughter of Isaac and Martha (Graves) Pierce. The ceremony was performed by John Crane. Her father was born October 11, 1731, married, October 22, 1755. Martha Graves. Edward Ellison resided at Uxbridge at the time of his marriage. Soon afterward he settled in Chester, Vermont. His wife's lineage was Polly (7), Isaac (6), Isaac (5), Daniel (4), Daniel (3), Anthony (2), John (1). Children: 1. Nahum. 2. Josiah, mentioned below. 3. Adolphus (his brother Joseph also had son Adolphus). 4. Cook, married Bruce. 5. Ruth. 6. Lucy, married James Paine. 7. Mary, married Gassett. 8. Almira, married

Willard Bailey. 9. Willard. 10. Joseph (probably named for uncle). 11. Abijah. 12. Elizabeth. The foregoing are not in order of birth.

(VII) Josiah Ellison, son of Edward Ellison (6), was born in Chester, Vermont, November 5, 1800. died at Holyoke, Massachusetts, October 14, 1872. He was brought up on his father's farm, and attended the common school. He left home when a young man and engaged in the trucking business in Boston, conducting an extensive business in the employ of many large houses until 1831, the year of his marriage, when he returned to his native town and purchased a farm of ninety acres, four miles north of North Chester village and conducted it successfully until about 1858, when he sold it and removed to Charlestown, New Hampshire. He continued farming at Charlestown until the death of his wife in 1863. He spent his last years with his daughter, Melissa Dudley. Though of a retiring disposition, he was affable and genial among his friends and highly respected by all who knew him. He and his wife attended the orthodox Congregational church. He was originally a Whig, later a Republican. He served in the militia of New Hampshire.

He married, January 6. 1831, at Boston, Eliza Ann Lund, born at Philadelphia, October 2, 1805, died at Charlestown, New Hampshire, March 16, 1863, daughter of David Lund, an officer in the army. Children: 1. George Pierce, born at Chester, October 28, 1831. died at Holyoke, March 19, 1006; married, May 31, 1854, Mary Ann Isham, of Chester; children: i. He left home at the age of seventeen and went to Mendon, Massachusetts, and learned the trade of shoemaker. He worked at his trade in Mendon and in the adjoining town of Uxbridge where his ancestors settled. At the age of twenty-three he removed to Charlestown, New Hampshire, where he was employed for four years in the boot and shoe factory of Hanson & West. After his marriage in 1859 he went to Belmont, Massachusetts, in the employ of his wife's father, Tisdale Harlow, superintendent of the John Cushing farm, one of the finest in that locality, and when Mr. Harlow relinquished his position Mr. Ellison was his successor. When Samuel Payson bought the estate of the Cushing heirs, Mr. Ellison continued in the management of this property while it was in possession of Mr. Payson.
