NYT, November 14, 1897, Wednesday, Page 10, 918 words:
William Van Wyck and his wife, Lydia Maverick, had four sons and
two daughters. The eldest, Samuel, became a physician. At the outbreak
of the civil war he was appointed Surgeon of Col. N.B. Forest's regiment
of Confederate calvalry. He was killed in battle. His widow and
two sons survive him and are now living Anderson, S.C. (MAYOR-ELECT
A MAVERICK; Judge Van Wyck Descended from the Famous Southern Family
of That Name. ANCESTORS OWNED MANY ACRES " Maverick," a New Word
Given to the Language, as Applied to Unbranded Cattle on Western
Ranges, Derived from His Progenitor. An interesting fact connected
with the ancestry of Mayor-elect Van Wyck which has been overlooked
by his biographers is his connection with the famous Maverick family,
which gave a new word to the English language in the term "maverick,"
applied, on the great cattle ranges of the West, to an animal found
without the owner's brand.)
