WINDMÜLLER, Louis, merchant; born Münster, IS35; educated at Gymnasium there and self-taught; came to New York, 1853; married Annie Eliza Lefman, a descendent of Capt. Thomas Lemmington, of the Revolutionary Army, on Nov. 23, 1859. One of founders of the German-Amereican Insurance Co., 1872, Title Guarantee & Trust Co., I882; president of the Maiden Lane Savings Bank, New York; director in corporations; Treasurer of the Legal Aid Soc., which furnishes gratuitous legal advice to helpless strangers; treasurer of the Reform Club, 1889-. Independent in politics; supported Cleveland on the tariff; with Carl Schurz and others formed the German-American Cleveland Union which greatly assisted in Cleveland's 2d election; supported McKinley on financial issue. His article, "A Strike for Lower Wages," in the North American Review was used as a campaign document. Managing Director, Board of Trade and Transportation; life member of the N.Y. Historical Society; member of the Germanistic Soc.; a vice president of the Germanic Museum Assn. of Cambridge, Miss.
